Hillsdale College hat Yonsei University April or May, 2006 This guy was a Korean student from Japan who'd bought this hat in Japan because he thought it looked cool. When I asked him how he knew of my alma mater, he said he didn't actually know what was written on it, just that he liked the design. Since Hillsdale is a tiny liberal arts college that not even most Americans have heard of, how very, very strange to encounter it in Asia.... |

Anti-Calculus Toothpaste Seoul July 21, 2006 An example of wonderful, zany Konglish. "Konglish" is Korean English - not really Korean, not really English. (Note, as a Korean friend wondered when I mentioned this, it actually turns out there's a 2nd definition of calculus in the dictionary, who knew?) |

Me at Cheonggyecheon Seoul July 30, 2006 As my shirt says, you probably don't recognize me without my cape. I'm wearing the "Han Dan" t-shirt they gave me on my last day at work -- it was signed by many of my coworkers. By the way, Jim, Paula, and crew -- the electronic dictionary / MP3 player continues to get quite a workout, I can't imagine living without it! Cheonggyecheon is a popular destination for Seoul city dwellars who want to take a stroll along this recently re-created stream that goes through the heart of the city. They often have great art shows here, and there is always something new to see. |

Kids and Backpacks Korean National Arboretum, Gyeonggi-do September 15, 2006 Not long after I transferred to Sogang University, we took a school field trip to the National Arboretum. After lunch I spotted this bunch of elementary school kids lined up with their backpacks (no, they go to a different school than I do :). |
